Nursing Education in Utah: A Summary of Utah’s Nurse Training Program Capacity 2007-2014
The Institute of Medicine recommended that 80% of RNs have a bachelors or higher level of education by 2020. In 2017, economist Joanne Spetz PhD, of the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, University of California, San Francisco analyzed how far that goal is from being actualized by creating a projection model of BSNs in the national nursing. As Utah’s Nursing Workforce Information Center, the following visualization was created to model Utah’s projected growth using a variety of data sources. This tool allows others to modify the model to see how altering variables affects the projected BSN workforce percentage.
The model uses data from UMEC’s RN supply data, UMEC’s RN Education data, Utah’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing licensure data, Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute’s Population Projections, and National Council of State Boards of Nursing national estimates of RNs.
